IEG Doctoral Fellowships at the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz)

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz offers 6 to 12-month research fellowships for doctoral students in European history, the history of religion, and other historical disciplines. These fellowships primarily support the writing-up phase of PhD dissertations.

About the Fellowship

The IEG funds PhD projects covering European history from the early modern period to contemporary history. The Institute particularly welcomes projects with:

• A comparative or cross-border approach
• A focus on Europe’s relation to the wider world
• Topics in intellectual and religious history
• Digital tools and methods
• Environmental history

Preparatory research, language courses, and book manuscript revisions are not eligible for funding.

What the Fellowship Offers

• Monthly stipend of €1,650
• Family allowance (€250 for a partner, €400 for the first child, €100 for each additional child)
• Affordable accommodation in the Institute’s hall of residence
• Workspace in open-plan offices or the library
• Academic mentoring by IEG staff
• Active participation in the Institute’s research community

Key Requirements

• Degree in history, religious history, historical theology, or a related historical discipline (minimum: MA or equivalent)
• Good English language skills
• Residence requirement in Mainz for the full duration of the fellowship
• No other gainful employment during the funding period
• Dissertation project sufficiently advanced for a 6–12 month writing-up stay

Application Deadlines

• 15 February – for fellowships starting in September
• 15 August – for fellowships starting in March of the following year

Required documents include a CV, table of contents, project description (max. 15,000 characters), work and time schedule, university certificates, and two academic reference letters sent directly by the referees to application@ieg-mainz.de.
