University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF)

Each year, the University of Manitoba offers graduate fellowships to full-time master’s and PhD students to recognize and support academic excellence. These fellowships are awarded to students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment. Students must be recommended by their department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS) for a UMGF.

Overview

Value and Duration

  • Master’s awards: $20,000 per year for 12 or 24 months (up to a total of $40,000).
  • Doctoral awards: $25,000 per year for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months (up to a total of $100,000).

Departments/units determine the exact value and duration of each award. All recommended students must meet the official eligibility criteria.

Period of Support Available

Total UMGF support for one student cannot exceed 4 years.

  • Master’s Students
  • PhD Students

Students who cannot accept their award within the academic year must decline it.

Eligibility

  • Basic Requirements
    • – Minimum admission GPA of 3.0 (some departments require a higher GPA — check with your unit).
    • – Open to all students regardless of citizenship (Canadian and international).
    • – Available in all fields of graduate study, provided the program is eligible for Tri-Agency funding.
  • To Hold a UMGF Award, Recipients Must Also:
    • – Be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a Master’s or PhD student (Pre-master’s and Occasional students are not eligible).
    • – Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and not receive a grade lower than C+ (including AX courses).
    • – Show strong promise as researchers and graduate students.
    • – Not have an active admission-related hold on their student account.
    • – Be registered full-time in the graduate program of the unit that recommended them and be progressing satisfactorily.
    • – Not have held UMGF support for more than 4 years in total.
    • – Not be receiving another singular award or scholarship of equal or greater value than the UMGF annual amount.
    • – Not change programs, routes, or departments/units while holding the award.

Application Process

Application deadlines and processes vary by department/unit.
Please contact your department or unit directly for their specific UMGF application process and deadline.

Once the department/unit selects candidates, they recommend students to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. FGPS reviews the recommendations and notifies successful recipients by official email letter.

  • Deadlines differ significantly between departments (examples from recent cycles have ranged from February to May).
