Kochi University of Technology Special Scholarship Program (SSP) 2026 – Fully-Funded PhD in Japan

Introduction:

Kochi University of Technology (KUT) in Japan is inviting applications for its Special Scholarship Program (SSP), a fully-funded 3-year doctoral program taught entirely in English. Since 2003, KUT has enrolled around 15 top international doctoral students each year, with over 200 graduates so far. No visit to Japan is required before beginning studies, making this one of the most accessible fully-funded PhD scholarships for international students.

About the Program:

The SSP supports advanced doctoral research in a multidisciplinary environment. Students conduct their research entirely in English under a dedicated supervisor, with the goal of becoming full-fledged, publication-ready researchers by the end of the 3-year program.

• Program: Doctoral Program (3 years), Graduate School of Engineering
• Degree awarded: Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering (or PhD, depending on field)

Scholarship Benefits (Full Funding):

• Exemption from the 15,000 yen entrance exam fee, 300,000 yen enrollment fee, and 535,800 yen/year tuition for all 3 years
• 150,000 yen/month living stipend for 3 years
• 150,000 yen one-time payment for travel and initial living costs (for applicants living outside Japan)
• Free English academic writing classes and Japanese language classes
• Tutor support and help finding accommodation (International House / dormitories)

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Written permission from your preferred SSP supervisor before applying
2. A master’s degree (or equivalent, after 18 years of education) — completed or expected before enrollment
3. Age 35 or under at the time of enrollment
4. Strong academic record from reputable universities (bachelor’s and master’s)
5. Genuine intent, knowledge, and research skill in the chosen field
6. High English proficiency
