Eligibility Criteria
- National of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (Japanese nationals ineligible)
- Born on or after 2 April 1992; exceptions only for war/military-service disruptions
- Willing to learn Japanese; good physical/mental health (medical certificate required)
- Not a military member; not a repeat MEXT grantee (limited exceptions)
Eligibility Criteria for Admission:
- Master’s/Doctoral (1st phase): 16 years of schooling abroad OR bachelor’s degree (3+ year program) OR equivalent eligibility
- Doctoral (2nd phase): overseas master’s/professional degree OR 2+ years recognized research experience
- Non-English/Japanese transcripts require certified translation
