The Osaka University MEXT Scholarship 2027 is now open for international students wishing to pursue their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degrees in Japan. Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan
- Have completed:
- High school for Bachelor’s
- Bachelor’s degree for Master’s
- Master’s degree for PhD
- Be born on or after April 2, 1999
- Show strong academic performance and research potential
- Demonstrate English or Japanese language proficiency
- Meet the health and visa requirements set by Japan

Application Timeline
Option 1: Embassy Recommendation Track
- February–March: Apply to the Japanese Embassy in your country
- May–July: Document and interview screening
- October: MEXT evaluates with university
- February (next year): Notification of result
- April: Start of academic year in Japan
Option 2: University Recommendation Track
- November–January: Apply via Osaka University
- May: Final results announced
- October: Students arrive in Japan
How to Apply (Embassy recommendation)?
Osaka University Scholarship recipient is recruited and initially screened by the Japanese Embassy & Depending, Consulate General on the country.
Those that received embassy recommendations and need to brush up – their Japanese language skill will receive the Intensive Japanese Language Course at the International Students Center for the first six months and then will be assigned to a graduate school as research students. If they pass the entrance examination, they will go to on to a regular (degree) program of a master’s course and doctoral course.
- – Mid to April: This Application is made to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General, depending on the country.
- May to July: At First screening (documentary examination, written examination and interview).
- On September 1: Request letter of acceptance to the University of Osaka sees below for procedures.
- On November : The Second screening (consultation between MEXT and the university)
- March (the following year): Notifications of the scholarship award is sent.
- April & October: Scholarship recipient to arrive in Japan.
