Want to build a strong extracurricular activity for your university applications while learning a real digital skill? The Humanitarian Mapping Initiative for Afghan Girls gives Afghan girls and female students a free 1–2 month volunteer experience with OpenStreetMap, the world’s open-source mapping platform. Volunteers learn to map roads, buildings, and landmarks in disaster-affected and vulnerable regions using satellite imagery, supporting humanitarian response teams worldwide. The project runs online in the 2026 cycle and requires no prior mapping experience.

Eligibility Criteria

• Open to Afghan girls and female students.
• Must have access to a computer or laptop with an internet connection.
• No prior OpenStreetMap or mapping experience required.
• Able to commit at least 1–2 hours per week to the project (higher time commitments of 3–5 or 5+ hours per week are also options during registration).
• Language of instruction: English or Farsi, based on volunteer preference. No minimum English proficiency level is required. Applicants self-report their English level (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced) during registration, but this is not a pass/fail requirement.
• No GPA, age limit, or standardized test score (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo) is listed on the official registration page.
