At KabulScholarship.com, our mission is to help Afghan students pursue higher education abroad. If you’re planning to apply for a master’s or PhD program at the University of Alberta in Canada, this guide will walk you through each step of the process -clearly and simply.
Step 1: Plan Early
Applying to a graduate program in Canada is a journey that takes time. It’s best to begin at least 10 to 12 months in advance of your intended start date.
- Each graduate program has different deadlines.( look here to date application deadline)
- Some close a full year before classes begin.
- Funding decisions are often made 6 to 9 months early.
International students: especially from Afghanistan, should apply early due to Study Permit processing times, which can take up to 6 months or more.
Step 2: Find the Right Program
The University of Alberta offers 500+ graduate programs in various fields of study.

Find the program that fits your interests and academic background.
Step 3: Understand the Requirements
General Requirements:
- All applicants must:
- Hold a recognized bachelor’s degree.
- Meet the minimum GPA requirement.
- Submit valid English language test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
Requirements may differ for Canadian and international applicants. Make sure to check the official requirements.
- Program-Specific Requirements:
- Each program may have extra conditions such as:
- Research proposals
- GRE or GMAT scores
- Portfolios or writing samples
Note: For thesis-based programs, some departments require that you first contact a potential supervisor before applying. Please refer to this programs: undergraduate programs page.
Step 4: Prepare Your Documents
To apply, you’ll need to upload all supporting documents as PDF files. The list usually includes:
- Official transcripts and degree certificates
- Proof of English language proficiency ( if applicable)
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Statement of Intent (your goals and interests)
- References or recommendation letters
Letters of reference must:
- Be on official letterhead
- Be signed and saved in PDF format
- Be submitted through a secure link sent by the university
Important: Your documents must be complete and submitted before the deadline. Late submissions will not be reviewed.
Integrity Reminder – No AI Tools
The University of Alberta does not allow the use of ChatGPT or any AI tools in your application materials. This includes your personal statement, essays, and writing samples.
- Everything you submit must be 100% your own original writing.
Step 5: Create Your GSMS Account
- Applications are submitted through the university’s online portal-GSMS (Graduate Studies Management Solution)
To start:
- Create a GSMS account using a valid email.
- Pay the non-refundable application fee: $135 CAD
Accepted payment methods: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover
Import: If someone else (e.g., sponsor or family member) is paying the fee, visit the GSMS FAQ page for third-party payment options.
Step 6: Submit Your Application Online
- The online form takes around 1 hour to complete.
- Use an updated browser like: (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari).
- Be sure to clear your browser cache before starting the form.
- Once submitted, your referees will automatically receive an email link to upload your reference letters.
Track Your Application
To check your application status:
- Log into your GSMS account
- Select your application and click “View Details”
- Open the “Documents” tab to see what actions are required
You can also contact the department directly for help with specific documents.
- Scholarships & Financial Aid
- When you apply for admission, you’ll automatically be considered for entrance scholarships. But don’t stop there! We recommend applying for external funding opportunities as well.
