The University of Tokyo Summer Internship 2026, also known as the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program, is one of the most prestigious fully funded research internships in Asia. This program offers international undergraduate students an opportunity to conduct advanced scientific research at Japan’s top university. The 2026 internship will take place from June 4, 2026 to July 31, 2026.

What is the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program?

This elite international internship provides students with eight weeks of full-time research in laboratories at UTokyo. The program is designed for students interested in:

Scholarship Benefits

All selected participants will receive:

  • Monthly Stipend- 270,000 JPY: Covers meals, transportation, personal expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

Academic Requirements

  • Be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program
  • Have completed at least 1 year of study before the program starts
  • Must not graduate before the internship begins
  • Must return to university for one semester/quarter afterward

Nationality

  • Students from all countries may apply

English Proficiency

If not studying in English:

  • TOEFL iBT 72+
  • IELTS 5.5+
  • Cambridge FCE
  • TOEIC 785 (L&R) or 310 (S&W)

If studying in English:

  • A letter from your university confirming English-medium instruction is accepted

Application Procedure

Application is completely online through the TAO Portal (The Admissions Office).

  • Step 1: Create a TAO Account: Use your legal name (same as your passport).
  • Step 2: Fill Out Application Form: Includes academic background, documents, SOP, questionnaire.
  • Step 3: Request Recommendation Letters: You must nominate 2 recommenders.
  • Step 4: Upload All Required Documents
  • Step 5: Submit the Application:  After submission, no edits are allowed.
