Opportunity Brief Description:

The Open Doors Russian Scholarship for International Students for 2023 is being offered by the Association of Global Universities in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. This scholarship (Olympiad) is open to Master’s and Doctoral international applicants, as well as stateless individuals and compatriots residing abroad. To be eligible, applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree or be in the process of completing one in the year of the Olympiad final for the Master’s track. For the doctoral track, PhD applicants must hold a Master’s or Specialist’s degree in the year of the Olympiad final.

The main goal of the Olympiad:

The main objective of the Olympiad is to provide scholarships to international students, stateless individuals, and compatriots residing abroad who are pursuing Master’s or Doctoral degrees. The competition enables the winners and runners-up to pursue their studies at any Russian university, including top-tier institutions, with the state covering their tuition fees. This results in a complete waiver of tuition fees and a government scholarship at one of Russia’s leading universities.

Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility Criteria for the 2023 Open Doors Russian Scholarship:

  1. Citizenship: The scholarship is open to all foreign residents, including stateless persons, and compatriots who permanently reside abroad.
  2. Academic Qualification: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (or a five-year specialist’s degree), or be in the process of completing the required degree program by 2023.
  3. Language Proficiency: Participants have the option to choose between Russian or English as the language of participation.

Benefits of the Open Doors Russian Scholarship:

Winners of the scholarship will have the opportunity to study at any Russian University of their choice.

  1. Free Tuition: Scholarship recipients are exempt from paying tuition fees, providing them with access to education without financial burden.
  2. Monthly Stipend: Students will receive a monthly stipend to support their living expenses. The exact amount of the stipend may vary depending on the university.

Please note*:  Students are responsible for covering their own travel and lodging expenses, as well as expenses related to insurance and personal needs.

Olympiad Tracks and Stages:

Generally, the Olympiad has two tracks, including one for Master’s and the next one for Doctoral/PhD prospective students. Also, the Olympiad consists of two stages in the Master’s track and three stages in the Doctoral track, which is a key to a PhD program. The details for each stages are as follows:

  1. Initial Stage: Portfolio Competition (Participants compete by submitting their portfolios for evaluation)
  2. Intermediate Stage: Problem-Solving Challenge (Contestants tackle a series of problem-solving challenges)
  3. Final Stage: Doctoral Program Selection and Interview (Contestants select a potential research supervisor for their desired doctoral program and undergo an interview with either the selected supervisor or the doctoral track manager.)

Participation Details in the Stages of Both Tracks:

For both the master’s and doctoral tracks, the participation process consists of two online rounds, with an additional stage exclusively for doctoral students.

  1. First Round – Portfolio Competition (September 15 to December 10, 2023):
    • Participants will compete in a portfolio competition conducted online. In this stage, entrants must pass an entry test, which is automatically evaluated.
    • Each entrant has three attempts to complete the test tasks, and the best result will be considered for assessment.
    • Successful participants will receive an invitation to proceed to the next stage of the Olympiad.
  1. Second Round – Olympiad (January 9 to January 18, 2024):
    1. Those who have been selected after the portfolio evaluation will participate in the Olympiad itself.
    2. The Olympiad consists of proctored online tests conducted within the specified dates.
    3. Participants will be tested on their knowledge and skills related to their respective tracks.

For Doctoral Track Only:

Third Round – Online Interviews (February 26 to March 13, 2024):
– In addition to the two stages mentioned above, doctoral candidates will proceed to the third round.
– This stage involves online interviews conducted between the specified dates.
– Participants will have the opportunity to interview up to three prospective research advisors of their choice.
– Based on the interviews, participants can select one research advisor from those who provided a positive evaluation.
