Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship, funding from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, management by the Council, and a distinctiveness that sets it apart from other postgraduate education initiatives in Ireland. Additionally, it serves as a complement to other funding sources for postgraduate education in the country.

  • individual, prestigious awards for excellent research in the name of the applicant;
  • an objective selection process using international, independent expert peer review;
  • funding across all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology; and
  • awards for bottom-up, non-directed research, except those funded by our strategic funding partners.

This initiative is unique and complements other postgraduate education funding sources in the country. It seeks pioneering proposals that introduce innovative approaches or address new and emerging research fields. The program encourages interdisciplinary proposals as it recognizes that integrating information, techniques, tools, and perspectives from multiple disciplines advances fundamental understanding. The program is highly competitive, with an average success rate of 18% over the past five years. Awardees are recognized as having world-class potential as future research leaders.

Some government bodies and agencies partner with the Irish Research Council to support this Scholarship Program to deliver on shared national objectives. The strategic funding partners of the Irish Research Council for 2024 are as follows:

Benefits of Scholarship

The scholarship has a maximum value of €28,000 per annum in any approved year and includes the following benefits:

  • A stipend of €19,000 per annum;
  • A contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 per annum; and
  • Eligible direct research expenses of €3,250 per annum.

Duration of Scholarship:

  • Research master’s degree: 1 year
  • Structured research master’s degree: 2 years
  • Traditional doctoral degree: 3 years
  • Structured doctoral degree: 4 years

Eligibility Criteria:

Prior to accessing the application form, all applicants must successfully answer eligibility questions on the online application system. It is important to carefully review the call for applications to ensure that the application meets the necessary criteria and is not deemed ineligible.

  • This scholarship program does not have any age restrictions for applicants.
  • Applications will only be accepted in either Irish or English languages.
  • Candidates applying for the 2024 scholarship must not have had two previous unsuccessful applications to this Program, including strategic partner themes.
  • The Irish Research Council does not provide funding for research in any of the prohibited areas.
  1. Human cloning for reproductive purposes;
  2. Genetic modification of human beings causes such changes, but for research relating to cancer treatment of the gonads.
  3. Creation of human embryos solely for stem cell procurement or research, including somatic cell nuclear transfer
    • International applicants encouraged to apply for this scholarship program.
    • They must possess a first-class or upper second-class honors bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
    • Applicants who have had two unsuccessful applications to this program, including to its strategic partner’s theme, are not eligible.
    • Candidates applying for a research master’s or doctoral degree should not currently hold or have previously held a Council scholarship.
    • The program welcomes innovative proposals that address new and emerging research fields or introduce creative approaches.
    • Interdisciplinary proposals are highly recommended as the program values the integration of various aspects of education and research.

Note: The majority of scholarships will be awarded to nationals of European Union member states and a proportion of scholarship will be awarded to those not resident or citizens of European Union members.
