The CAS–ANSO–TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship 2026 invites talented students and young researchers from developing countries to pursue fully funded doctoral studies in China.

This program is jointly offered by the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO), with the shared mission of advancing science, technology, and innovation in the Global South.

Under this collaboration, up to 40 PhD candidates from developing countries will be awarded scholarships each year to study at top Chinese institutions such as the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). Ten of these awards are prioritized for applicants conducting climate-related research.

The program aims to cultivate high-level scientific talent, enhance global collaboration in research, and support sustainable development through education and innovation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To qualify for the CAS–ANSO–TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Must not hold Chinese citizenship
  • Must be a national of a developing country in the South
  • Must be proficient in English or Chinese
  • Must hold a Master’s degree (MSc) in a related field
  • Must be born on or after 1 January 1991
  • Must meet the admission standards of USTC/UCAS for international PhD students
  • Must not hold other full scholarships or assignments during the study period
  • Applicants currently enrolled in any PhD program in China are not eligible
  • Applicants cannot apply to both USTC and UCAS simultaneously

  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  3. Degree certificates and transcripts

  4. Two recommendation letters

  5. Research proposal or study plan

  6. Proof of English or Chinese proficiency

  7. Passport copy

  8. Other supporting documents requested by USTC/UCAS
