Opportunity Brief Description

The Diversity Immigrant Visa “USA Green Card” Program is administered annually by the Department of State in accordance with the law. The program, established under Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), is designed to provide immigration opportunities to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. In Fiscal Year 2025, a total of 55,000 Diversity Visas (DVs) will be made available.

To be eligible for a Diversity Visa, selected applicants (referred to as “selectees”) must meet straightforward yet strict requirements. The Department of State randomly selects selectees through a computerized drawing.

Successful applicants of the DV program can enjoy permanent residency in the USA, allowing them to live, work, and study in the country.

According to the State Department, for the 2023 DV program, over 54,000 issuances/adjustments of status have been granted globally out of the total 54,833 available DVs for FY 2023. Additionally, it is important to note that as per U.S. immigration law, no individual country can receive more than seven percent of the available DVs in any fiscal year.

Application Period for the USA Diversity Visa (DV) Program:

The registration for the DV lottery takes place during a designated time frame each year. The State Department has announced that the application period for the USA Diversity Visa Program (DV LOTTERY) 2025 will commence in early October 2023 and conclude in early November.

In the previous year, the DV Lottery 2024 started on October 5, 2022 (Wednesday, 12:00 pm EDT or 8:00 PM Afghanistan time) and ended on November 8, 2022 (Wednesday, 12:00 pm EDT or 8:00 PM Afghanistan time).

Eligibility to apply for the USA Green card?

To qualify:

1. The applicant must be born in an eligible country, or their spouse must be born in an eligible country.(Afghans and Iranian are also eligible) 
2. The applicant must have either a minimum of 12 years of education (equivalent to high school) or at least two years of recent work experience in an occupation that requires a minimum of two years of training.
3. If the applicant is married, they can include their spouse and children who are under the age of 21 in the application.

Photo requirements for USA Green Card:

1. The photo should be taken within the past six months.
2. There should be no shadows in the photo.
3. The photo should be clear and in color.
4. Head and shoulders of the person should be visible.
5. Background of the photo should be white or off-white.
6. Avoid using any retouching tools to alter the head, face, and neck.
7. The person should be directly facing the camera, with their eyes clearly visible.
8. The full face should be visible, without any cloth, hat, or head coverings, except for religious or medical purposes.
9. For children, they should be facing the camera with their eyes visible, and there should be no other people in the photo. If the infant’s eyes are not open or not entirely open, it is acceptable.
10. The photo should be in JPEG format.

Requirements for photo dimensions:

Option 1: 1200 x 1200 pixels
Option 2: 600 x 600 pixels

The photo file size should not exceed 240 kilobytes.

If using an existing photo scan, it should be sized at 51 x 51 mm and have a resolution of 300 pixels per inch.

Passport requirement:

In previous years (DV 2022 and 2023), main applicants were required to have a valid travel passport. However, for this year, the DV program has eliminated this requirement, and there is no need to provide passport.

How to Apply ?

To apply for the DV Lottery, follow these steps:

1. Visit the DV Lottery Official Website and access the online application form.
2. Simply click the “Apply Now” button and select the appropriate entry when the page opens.
3. Fill in your details accurately, ensuring that your uploaded photo meets the USA visa requirements for your respective field.
4. If you have a spouse and children, include their details in the application.
5. Review your information carefully for accuracy.
6. After submission, a confirmation page will appear, indicating that your application was successfully submitted.
7. Make sure to print or save a PDF file of this confirmation, as the DV program does not send any separate confirmation.
8. The confirmation page will contain a unique confirmation number, which is essential for checking your result when it is announced.

Important Notes:

• When entering your name, follow the format specified in your passport, including your family name and first name. If your passport includes a middle name, include it as well. If you have only one name, enter it in the last/family name field.
• It is recommended to complete the application by yourself. If others offer assistance, make sure you are present during the entry process to provide accurate answers to the questions. Retain your unique confirmation number and print out the confirmation screen.
• Keep a printout of your confirmation page and confirmation number as they are essential for future reference.
