OIST Research Internship Program 2026–2027 in Japan

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) offers a highly competitive Research Internship Program for outstanding bachelor’s and master’s students from around the world. This fully supported short-term research opportunity allows participants to work in world-class laboratories in Japan for 4 to 6 months.

Program Overview

OIST is one of Japan’s leading research institutions, known for its international environment and interdisciplinary approach. Research Interns join a research unit of their choice and gain hands-on experience under the supervision of top faculty members.

The program is especially suitable for students who want to strengthen their research skills and are considering applying to the OIST PhD program in the future.

What Support Does OIST Provide?

  • One round-trip airfare
  • Furnished accommodation (on or off campus)
  • Daily internship allowance: 2,400 JPY per working day
  • OIST Shuttle Bus Pass
  • Visa support (Certificate of Eligibility)

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants include:

  • Students in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree
  • Master’s students (any year)
  • Recent graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree

Current PhD students are not eligible.

Are Afghan Students Eligible?

Yes. OIST does not restrict applications based on nationality. Afghan students who meet the academic requirements can apply. However, obtaining a Japanese visa can be challenging for Afghan nationals. Applicants are strongly advised to contact OIST Admissions and the Japanese Embassy early regarding visa procedures.

  • 1–3 recommendation letters from professors
