The Deutsche Welle (DW) Traineeship 2027–2028 is now open for applications! This fully funded and highly competitive journalism program welcomes talented, open-minded, and critical thinkers from around the world who are passionate about journalism and storytelling.

DW’s bilingual (German-English) international traineeship is one of the most prestigious media training programs in Europe. It offers hands-on experience in cross-media journalism — TV, online, and radio — at DW headquarters in Bonn and Berlin, Germany.

Selected candidates will work alongside experienced DW journalists, gaining practical skills in producing news and digital content for an international audience. The traineeship focuses on innovation, multimedia storytelling, and global perspectives.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for the DW International Traineeship 2027–2028:

1. Language Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following language combinations:

  • Native speaker of a DW program language + Excellent English (C1/C2) and Good German (B1/B2)

  • Native English speaker + Good German (B1/B2)

  • Native German speaker + Excellent English (C1/C2)

DW Program Languages include:
Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Dari, English, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Kiswahili, Macedonian, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu.

2. Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a university degree, journalism school diploma, or completed vocational training.

  • Relevant certificates must be provided in digital form.

3. Experience

  • Prior experience in journalism or media production is an advantage.

  • Applicants from other professional backgrounds (e.g., IT, law, medicine, science, arts) are also welcome if they show strong motivation for journalism.

  • Submission of published work samples (articles, videos, podcasts, etc.) is required.

Application Procedure

The DW traineeship selection consists of three stages:

  1. Online Application

    • Submit the application form via DW’s official portal.

    • Upload your CV, certificates, and work samples (in one of DW’s program languages).

  2. Assessment Center (Second Round)

    • Around 50–60 candidates are invited to an online assessment in mid-May.

    • Includes creativity tests, writing exercises, language evaluation, and camera presentation.

  3. Final Interview (Third Round)

    • About 20 finalists meet with DW’s directors and editors for panel interviews.

    • Final selection of 12 successful trainees is announced afterward.
