The MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) — organized by MIT’s Office of Graduate Education — offers a fully funded, nine-week summer internship for talented undergraduate students interested in research and graduate school. Interns will work alongside MIT faculty, graduate students, and researchers, participate in a research project, attend weekly professional development seminars, and present their work at the end of the program. The 2026 edition of MSRP runs from June 8 to August 8, 2026.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants to the MSRP General track must satisfy:
- Minimum GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
- Be enrolled full-time in a U.S. undergraduate institution (excluding MIT).
- Be a sophomore, junior, or non-graduating senior with at least two academic years of college-level work done by summer start.
- Intend to pursue a graduate degree (research/academic path).
- Eligible visa/work authorization if non-U.S. citizen.
MIT strongly encourages applications from students with underrepresented backgrounds or who have faced structural challenges.
Eligibility Exceptions & Notes
- First-year students are generally not eligible, unless part of a special program (e.g., Leadership Alliance FYRE).
- Even if your GPA is under 3.5, you may still apply if you demonstrate strong potential or personal challenges.
- You cannot take classes or enroll in any courses while participating in MSRP- full commitment is required.
- Being accepted into MSRP does not guarantee admission to MIT graduate programs

Required Documents
To apply, candidates must submit:

- Academic transcript(s) (unofficial acceptable)
- Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a faculty member)
- A personal statement + research interests essay
- Research preferences (name at least 3 MIT faculty or research groups)
Application Procedure
- Apply online: Through the MIT Office of Graduate Education’s MSRP application portal.
- Complete the form with personal information, academic history, and research interests.
- Nominate recommenders: Enter details for two referees. They will get email invitations to upload letters.
- Submit all materials by January 20, 2026
- Wait for notification: Admissions decisions are usually sent by March 31
