Job Description

Afghanistan short story competition 2025, A Thousand Voices, Afghan youth writers, Afghan storytelling, Projects for Peace.

Stories That Connect, Voices That Resist

The world often sees Afghanistan through the narrow lens of war, conflict, and despair—flattening millions of voices into a single narrative of victimhood.

A Thousand Voices, a Projects for Peace initiative, challenges this silence. Through a global short story competition and anthology series, the project seeks to amplify the lived experiences, dreams, and resilience of Afghan youth—written by them, in their own words.

Why It Matters

  • This project exists because stories matter.
  • They connect us across borders and generations.
  • They resist silence and reclaim dignity.

For Afghan youth, storytelling is an act of courage—a declaration that their lives and voices matter in a world that too often speaks for them.
Every submission becomes part of a growing chorus of a thousand voices that refuse to be erased.

About the Initiative

A Thousand Voices is more than a competition—it’s a movement of storytelling, identity, and resistance. This platform empowers Afghan youth to reclaim their narratives, offering the world authentic stories of hope, creativity, and belonging.

In partnership with educators, cultural organizations, and diaspora networks, the initiative creates a space for Afghan writers to share their truth and imagination with global audiences.

The Journey – From Stories to a Movement

1. Begins September 2025 – Story Submissions

Afghan youth (ages 16–34) are invited to submit short stories—fiction or nonfiction—centered on themes of identity, resilience, and home. Each piece should reflect the complexity and richness of Afghan life, beyond the headlines.

2. November 1st, 2025 – Submissions Close

The final deadline. After this date, no new entries will be accepted.
Our editorial team will begin reviewing all submissions, shortlisting the most powerful voices for the next stage.

3. January 2026 – Reach Out to Writers

Selected writers will receive emails inviting them to short interviews and verification sessions.
This process ensures that each story is authentic, and that the writer’s voice truly represents their lived experience.

4. August 2026 – Publishing & Book Launch (Washington D.C.)

A celebration of Afghan creativity and resilience.
On the fifth anniversary of Kabul’s fall, we will gather in Washington D.C. for a public book launch, readings, and recognition of the incredible young storytellers shaping a new Afghan narrative.

Prizes and Recognition

  1. 1st Place: $1,500
  2. 2nd Place: $1,000
  3. 3rd Place: $500

Beyond the prizes, selected stories will be published in an international anthology and showcased during the book launch in Washington D.C.
