The JAUW International Fellowship 2026 is a fully funded research opportunity in Japan for international women scholars who hold a Master’s degree or higher. Opportunity Description

The Japanese Association of University Women (JAUW) has been offering international fellowships since 1987 to support highly qualified women researchers. The fellowship is designed for international female scholars who reside outside Japan and wish to conduct independent or collaborative research at a Japanese host institution.

Selected fellows will stay in Japan for 4 to 6 months between October 2026 and March 2027. The fellowship provides financial support to cover living costs and transportation expenses, enabling fellows to focus fully on their academic research.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Must be under 45 years of age as of March 31, 2026

  • Must not reside in Japan at the time of application

  • Must hold a Master’s degree or higher

  • Must secure a host university or research institution in Japan

  • Must submit a research plan explaining how the fellowship will be used

  • Must understand that the fellowship cannot be extended

  • Must complete a financial aid questionnaire

Fellows’ Responsibilities

Selected fellows must:

  • Arrange accommodation in Japan with assistance from the host supervisor

  • Actively participate in the approved research project

  • Submit a 500–700 word written research report at the end of the fellowship

  • Deliver an oral presentation at a JAUW meeting

  • Acknowledge JAUW support in any resulting publications

  • Obtain written approval from JAUW for any changes to the research schedule

  • Complete all official procedures on time to avoid cancellation of the fellowship
