Opportunities

Are you an artist, curator, or writer passionate about exploring new cultures and expanding your creative horizons? The “Kyoto Retreat 2025” offers a unique opportunity to spend four weeks immersed in Japan’s rich cultural heritage—from October 16 to November 13, 2025.

What is Kyoto Retreat?

Kyoto Retreat is a fully funded residency program designed to give artists, curators, and writers time and space for research, rest, and reflection. While there are scheduled events, the main goal is to allow participants to freely explore Japanese culture, get inspired, and connect with fellow creatives in a calm, nurturing environment. Participants are not required to produce new work during the residency.

Who can apply?

  • Visual artists, curators, and writers aged 21 and above, from anywhere in the world, regardless of race, gender, culture, or religion.

What does the program cover?

  • Round-trip airfare to Kansai International Airport (KIX) or Osaka International Airport (Itami Airport, ITM)
  • Private bedroom in a shared house for four weeks
  • $800 USD stipend for meals and local transportation

Why participate?

  • Artists: will find inspiration in Kyoto’s iconic temples such as Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, renowned for their architecture, light and shadow play, and intricate details.
  • Curators: can experience Kyoto as a living museum of traditional Japanese arts, from tea ceremonies and ikebana to Noh theater, alongside contemporary art exhibitions.
  • Writers: will enjoy serene gardens and scenic streets, especially vibrant in autumn, perfect for deep reflection and creative writing on themes like nature, philosophy, and life.

Application deadline: July 15, 2025
